Greenhouse Gas Mitigation

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and transitioning to low-carbon development are among the key priorities of the climate policy of the Kyrgyz Republic. Under the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), sector-specific mitigation measures have been identified to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the economy.

The Kyrgyz Republic has committed to reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by 18% unconditionally and by up to 30% with international support by 2030, compared with the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. By 2035, the corresponding targets are 16% unconditionally and up to 39% with international support.

Overview

The energy sector is one of the key sectors for greenhouse gas emissions reduction in the Kyrgyz Republic. Priority measures focus on improving energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy sources, and modernizing energy infrastructure.

Overview

Transport is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the Kyrgyz Republic due to the increasing number of motor vehicles. Key mitigation measures focus on transport electrification and improving the efficiency and sustainability of the transport system.

Overview

Mitigation measures in the industrial sector focus on modernizing production technologies, improving energy efficiency, and reducing the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in line with international commitments.

Overview

Greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector are primarily associated with livestock production and land use. Mitigation measures focus on improving agricultural productivity while reducing emissions through sustainable land management and climate-smart agricultural practices.

Overview

The Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector has significant potential to increase greenhouse gas removals and restore ecosystems. Sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration play a vital role in achieving the climate mitigation targets of the Kyrgyz Republic.
