Sectoral Adaptation

Climate change adaptation is one of the key priorities of the national climate policy of the Kyrgyz Republic. The country's mountainous terrain and its strong dependence on water resources, agriculture, and natural ecosystems make it particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The Nationally Determined Contribution of the Kyrgyz Republic (NDC 3.0) recognizes adaptation as an integral component of sustainable development and national security. Adaptation measures are aimed at reducing climate risks, strengthening the resilience of communities, the economy, and ecosystems, and enhancing the country's capacity to respond to climate-related challenges.

NDC 3.0 builds upon previous climate commitments and identifies the following priority adaptation sectors:

  • Water Resources;
  • Agriculture;
  • Disaster Risk Reduction;
  • Health;
  • Energy;
  • Forestry and Biodiversity;
  • Cities and Human Settlements.

Particular attention is given to strengthening the climate resilience of mountain areas, developing early warning systems, promoting climate-resilient technologies, and ensuring an inclusive approach to adaptation.

Overview

Water resources are one of the priority areas for climate change adaptation in the Kyrgyz Republic. Climate change has significant impacts on glaciers, hydrological regimes, water availability, and the country's overall water security.

Objective

To ensure water security, promote sustainable water resources management, and enhance the resilience of the water sector to the impacts of climate change.

Overview

The Kyrgyz Republic is among the countries most vulnerable to natural hazards, including mudflows, landslides, avalanches, droughts, and other climate-induced disasters.

To reduce climate- and disaster-related risks and strengthen preparedness for emergencies.

Climate change poses growing risks to public health in the Kyrgyz Republic. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, deteriorating air and water quality, and the spread of climate-sensitive diseases increase the vulnerability of the population, particularly children, older persons, and other at-risk groups.

To strengthen the resilience of the public health system to the impacts of climate change and protect population health.

To enhance ecosystem resilience and conserve biodiversity under changing climate conditions.
